Tolerizing potential of human DC subsets

DCs are important regulators of the innate and adaptive immune system, but also control central and peripheral tolerance. We found in contrast to blood DCs that human DC subsets of the thymus were unable to secrete cytokines and chemokines upon stimulation with various TLR ligands, although they upregulated typical DC activation markers. The analysis of the tolerogenic potential of human thymus DCs will form the basis for future clinical treatment of various autoimmune or cancer diseases.
